Iraq update from 4 SCOTS

The Adjutant (Steve Garmory) has sent me a short Sitrep from Iraq, which I have para phrased into this brief 'Update'.

The Highlanders, 4SCOTS (minus) have now occupied living accommodation in Camp Douglas. (Named after LCpl Allan Douglas who was killed in BASRA in 2006). The Camp has limited welfare facilities but it does boast SAT phones and Computer Terminals so the lads can communicate with Home. The Highlanders share the Camp with a Company of Royal Anglians - relations are good.

The Jocks' first month (Maj Adrian Rielly - A Coy) in theatre, while waiting for 53 Iraqi Bde to finish their Unit Set Fielding, has been spent on Permanent Veh Check Points (PVCP's) around the Main COB to ensure security. Although dull they have done an excellent job (having relieved the Czech's) and under the direction of RSM Wilson have reorganised the VCP's so they support each other. This has already paid dividends as Hldr Chao-Banda apprehended a thief (escaping the COB) and Lt Jonny Thompson's Pl stopped potential Bomb making equipment from leaving the COB. They have also conducted several training exercises on the use / command of armoured vehicles and weapons systems. This will all assist the A Coy MiTT's when they start with their 53 Iraqi Bde Battalions.

The Commanding Offr (CO) and his MiTT (Mentor and Trg Team) are working out of Numeniyah several hours away but they are due back in Camp Douglas by the end of July.

Maj Callum Lane and Waterloo Coy are with the SCOTS DG and doing an excellent job in BASRA City. Assaye Pl under Maj Barry McMaster (who will take over from Callum Lane in August) is deployed in support of 50 Iraqi Bde at Abu Al Qasib.

Maj Phil White and B Coy are flat out in support of 16 Air Asstl Bde in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. I spoke to Phil on a 'poor link' yesterday and he was upbeat and full of praise for his lads. They are due out of theatre by late Aug.

That's all for now.  Kind regards

Maurice Gibson

We both give a very special thanks to Bobby & Margaret Munro for putting us up, or putting up with us whatever the case may be for the weekend , I only wish that Bobby had warned us about the sun and we would have brought our shorts . Seoras and Ruth McIntosh

UPDATED: The link for the NI Commemorative Service in London in September is now live. Click below to get application details etc. See May entry for further information.

Commemorative Tickets Page

The Highlanders (4 SCOTS) are all now deployed on Ops as follows;

B Coy - (Major Phil White) are approx 1/2 way through their tour in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. (Major Ross G Hunter - originally a RS will take over in Oct 08 after post tour leave)

D Coy now Waterloo Coy (Major Callum Lane) are a hybrid Coy OPCOM the SCOTS DG and are working in Southern Iraq.(Major Barry McMaster will take over in Aug 08).

BHQ (Lt Col Jamie Campbell), A Coy (Major Adrian Reilly) and the Echelon are currently in Kuwait completing their conversion vehicle training before going to Iraq (Basra area initially) on or about Jun 6th. They have formed a Bde MiTT and 3 x BG MiTT's.

I understand that MiTT's are Training and Mentoring teams working to and with the Iraqi Army. The Iraqis have the lead. This is a similar job to the one done very successfully by 1 SCOTS over the last 4 months

Major Ally Gray has deployed for 2 months and will hand over the 2 i/c post in Aug to Major Phil Keetley. Major Barry McMaster has deployed with BHQ and will do a G5 Planner / Mentors job until he takes over D Coy.

Capt Steve Garmory (Adjutant) will act as a permanent foot on the ground and will be based at the COB - BFPO 641. Everyone else will move around Southern Iraq in support of the Iraqi Army.

The Rear Party in Fallingbostel is commanded by Capt John Frame (0049 1738 873188) and he is supported by Capt Ross Smith (RCMO)  and Capt Ronnie Christie (UWO). The Rear Party is tight on numbers. I trust this sets the scene.

Kind regards

Friends of the Regimental Museum

A letter from Lt Col Bobby Towns is here. Please read the whole thing and action where necessary or if you can help the Museum in any way. One of the main points is:

"Regularly I read comments on the website of how rightly proud you all are to be members of the “Blue Mafia” and therefore, I was surprised to find this is not supported in the numbers that contribute to the running of this excellent facility by making a donation or subscription through the Friends of the Museum SchemeLess than 5% of all those who served in the QO HLDRS have made or regularly make contributions.  I would like to think this low percentage is because you don’t know about this appeal which has now been in place for some time and I would ask all who receive this communication, not only to consider a contribution, but in addition to play a part by passing it on to all QO HLDRS (and anyone else who you can persuade to contribute) in your address books"

[Direct Debit/donation form in pdf format is here] Please print off and return or pass a copy to anyone you know who might want one

The Museum also needs help in other ways

Work Party

"When required I would like to have a number of QO HLDRS available to assist with this and therefore have in mind a database called the Fort George Fifty.  I calculate that, based on past experience that this will be the number required (taking into consideration “Sick Chitties etc”) to support a Fatigue Party of 10 on any particular day!  To volunteer your services please email me at bob@townssb.freeserve.co.uk simply adding Fort George Fifty and please include your address, Telephone Number and where possible Mobile Number.  Please note that an NCO IC is not required!

RESEARCHING ARMY ANCESTORS?

RESEARCH - SOURCES OF INFORMATION

Before you start any research on soldiers from World War One it might be worth visiting the 1914-1918 website for some useful advice from someone who has been down the research path.

Look at this website as well: National Archives (Army) as they have a guide to tracing your military ancestors. If you have a question about  regimental history  or are looking for photos etc - use the information request form here to contact Regimental Headquarters who will pass details to the Museum staff.

Details of most individual soldiers are not usually kept within the museum's archives.  Very often, more information on individual soldiers are held at one of the following locations:

The National Archives (for Enquiries Pre-1920)

The National Archives, Ruskin Avenue, Kew, Surrey TW9 4DU

Telephone 0208 876 3444     Website: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Note - during World War Two 60% of the service records from the First World War were lost or destroyed.

World War One Soldiers' Documents

British Army World War One Service and Pension Records are online for first time.  You can now search for surnames beginning with the letters A and B.  When the project is complete you will be able to search c.2.5 million soldiers' records. Searching the name index is free. Pages from the original files are available by subscription or with Pay per View from Ancestry.co.uk
