place the cash on John Baybut's appeal.

Edinburgh Branch Christmas Dance
The Branch Christmas Dance will be held at the Royal Navy Club on Friday 5th December 2008. We have booked a highly recommended comedy double act called “The Bald Eagles” and they will be providing the entertainment on the night, as well as the music to dance by. By all the reports we have received about them, this act will make the night go with a bang and will hopefully get everyone into the right Christmas Spirit.
The Royal Navy Club is situated at the bottom of Rodney Street at the junction with Broughton Road. It has good parking, good disability access, a good function room, and club prices. We hope to fill the hall, and as the venue is capable of seating over a hundred, we thought you might fancy bringing along some guests. If you do fancy bringing friends or relatives along please let Danny Carruthers know so he can gauge the interest and ensure that Branch members get priority. The tickets are a snip at £15.00 per head.
As usual, we will also be holding our usual Christmas Raffle and any prizes you wish to donate will be most gratefully received. For those of you that live further afield and require accommodation near to the venue, Sandy Dewar has previously sussed out the addresses of a few Guest Houses within a three minute walk of the venue. They are:
If you intend to come to the Christmas Dance please fill in the proforma here and return to Danny Carruthers as soon as possible

THE HIGHLANDERS, 4TH BATTALION THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF SCOTLAND UPDATE
Since the last update through the Regimental Secretary, much has changed. The most major change being that only the 134 man contingent, who form the 4 SCOTS Battle Group and the 55 man Highlanders element of the hybrid Waterloo Company, part of the SCOTS DG Battle Group, remain deployed. Those who were deployed in Afghanistan are now safely out of theatre.
Since recovery from Op HERRICK 8, B Company has had some degree of respite. A short stint in barracks led into some well deserved Post Operational Tour Leave. With their departure on leave, the Battalion said a fond farewell the former Company Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Phil White MBE, as he moved off to Headquarters LAND Command upon promotion. The Company returned from leave and went straight into Exercise BONNIE RETURN, welcoming Major Ross Hunter into the fold en route. This exercise was a chance for the Company to consolidate and capitalise on their experiences by reinforcing the recruiting efforts in the north of Scotland. Following that, the Company conducted some low level Adventure Training to round off the exercise. Now back to work in Fallingbostel, preparations have already begun for 2009.
B Company are not the only soldiers from the Battalion to have returned from Afghanistan recently. Captain Ray Dalzell and Warrant Officer Class Two William Gibb have successfully returned with their 13 ‘omlettes’[1]. These soldiers were attached to the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment who were charged mentoring the Afghan National Army in all phases of operations. To a man, they were praised in correspondence from the Commanding Officer of The Royal Irish for their excellent work. Unfortunately, they return without Sergeant Jonathon Mathews who died from a gunshot wound in late July. They are now on post operational tour leave.
In Iraq, Operation TELIC 12 continues. The work is bitty, and often fraught with frustration, but nonetheless rewarding. The Battle Group is spread across Basra City in five separate locations. The Commanding Officer, Regimental Sergeant Major and their Military Transition Team (MiTT) are still based in the austere Naval Base in the centre Basra. They are collocated with Major Toby Christie and his team. The MiTT have had several highlights, the most prolific being escorting the Secretary of Defence, the Rt Hon John Hutton MP, around Basra. Of note, this was his first experience of the Army in the field on operations! Outside of that, the MiTT are busy every day mentoring the Iraqis through operations of varying complexity with increasing levels of success. Most recently, they have mentored the Iraqis through several successful search operations in some of the least friendly parts of Basra.
Major Jeremy Giles and his MiTT are still based in the Hyanniyah, the poorest part of Basra. Showing the diversity of the Jocks, they not only have to work with the day to day challenges presented by the Iraqis but they also work to an American Brigade Headquarter’s MiTT. Where others see frictions the Jocks have seen opportunity and forged strong links with both the Iraqis and the Americans. This MiTT’s focus of late has been to steer the Iraqi Army toward consent winning operations through Civil Military Operational Cooperation projects in schools and other public amenities.
|
Major Barry McMaster and Warrant Officer Class Two Euan Philbin continue to mentor the 3rd Battalion of the Iraqi 50 Brigade in the further outpost of Abu Al Khasib. The MiTT has established the strangely named Camp Craw as a real home from home. Although they have been involved in standard security operations in their Area of Operations, they have also had to keep a weathered eye on insurgent riverine movement due to their proximity to the Shatt Al Arab Waterway. They have also sought means to win consent with the local population, so much so that Maj McMaster found himself on the front cover of the British Forces Germany newspaper, the Sixth Sense!
In early August, Major Adrian Reilly and Warrant Officer Class Two Tony Ronaldson started mentoring the Iraqi Special Operations Company. The Company was so successful, largely due to the efforts of Adrian’s MiTT, that the Iraqis have taken the idea to the next level and established the Commando Battalion! Major Reilly and his team continue to work hand in glove with this elite Iraqi unit in the most demanding, not to mention dangerous, operations.
Detached from the Battle Group but still setting the pace are the soldiers from D Company who form Waterloo Group alongside soldiers from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. The Company is about to send off their Company Commander, Major Callum Lane, who moves to Headquarters 7th Armoured Brigade as the Grade 2 Staff Officer responsible for Plans. He will be replaced in due course by Major Barry McMaster. He may have left the Battalion, but he has not gone too far.
Last but not least is Rear Party who has supported us so well throughout the year. Steadily growing as troops begin to return from Iraq, this is currently where the balance of the Battalion lies at the moment. Not only have Captains Arthur Frame and Ross Smith managed to support us ‘at the front’ but also run a comprehensive training programme for no less than 190 soldiers at any one time and provide support to our families.
In slightly less operational news, the Assaye Day Football Match was played in Basra between the Officers’ and Sergeants’ Messes. Unfortunately the Sergeants’ won by last minute goal from Sergeant Bob Hamilton who plays in this his final year in the Army. There is some saving grace, however, the wives played in Fallingbostel where Charlie Campbell captained the Officers’ Mess team to a victory!
As the rollercoaster year which is 2008 draws to a close, the Battalion as a whole looks forward to a well deserved Christmas leave. For many it will be the first chance many will have to spend significant time with their loved ones prior since last Christmas. It also brings the first opportunity since December 2007 for The Highlanders to be together again as one!
Le Gillean Cabar Feidh, agus Hundraich, agus Erracht, gu brath!
Captain (Adjutant) Steve Garmory

Trooping the Colour in Osnabruck mid 70s
I don't know if you want to publish this but it has never been seen before as I took it whilst on duty as BOS so if Lt Col C. Miller (Ex RSM) wishes to give me 21 extra duties he his a wee bit late. Brian Perry (RSWO) is Right Marker of the front division. I think Tam Ward is one of the escorts, Jimmie Paris is in the ranks of the 2nd division and of course RSM C. Miller as he was then is on parade. Others may recognise themselves but my memory for names is fast fading away. It was Osnabruck but I cannot remember the your, either 1973 or 74.

Ronnie Hardie - a message from Janny Hardie
I would dearly love to name and thank you all individually but there were too many to name on one page - I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all who sent condolence and sympathy cards to me on the loss of my dearly beloved Ronnie.
I would also like to express a very big thank you, to all (again too many to mention) who made the long and costly journey to Kilmarnock to pay their respects to a man dearly loved by myself and, by the turnout, many of those who attended, I must also extend my thanks to the many of you who are still working in far off places and could not attend but did send their love and support; from my heart I thank you
I also wish to mention George Monaghan for fulfilling Ronnie's wish for a piper to attend, he would have been proud as punch knowing you were all there for him
I would also like to express my thanks to the Regimental Association for the help they have provided to me during this sad time If I have missed anyone please forgive me it was not intentional.
Lastly, thank you to all who donated to the Ayrshire Hospice the total figure was rounded up to £200:00 From the bottom of my heart I thank you all a million times
Rest in peace Ronnie, I will always Love you and keep you in my heart Janny xxx

Another Mike Jacobs novel out
This gripping book tells the story of a group of soldiers of The Queen's Own Highlanders and their adventures during the service in the Far East in the 1960s. During operations in Borneo and Malaya they were engaged in long border patrols and in anti-piracy patrols aimed at curbing their activities in the South China Sea. Mike Jacobs' fast moving book describes the daring rescue of hostages at the time of the rebellion in Brunei, leads us to his discovery of Japanese soldiers, still unaware that WWII had finished sixteen years earlier, and to a hoard of Japanese War gold. While enjoying a well-earned rest they experienced some amazing events during wild nights in downtown Singapore's gangland. Fact and fiction are skilfully interwoven and not all of the most incredible stories are fiction - now it is up to you - the reader to decide which is which! Published 14th October

Gentlemen, I am sure that you will all beware of the tragic death of Joseph Lappin, a 16 year old cadet with The Liverpool Scottish, who was murdered in Liverpool on Monday 20 10 08. It was James` ambition to become a Regular Soldier and no doubt given the tradition of Scousers joining regular Scottish Battalions, I am sure that he would have wished to join The Highlanders (4th Bn Royal Regiment of Scotland).
Any cards, letters of condolence, please send via Hon. Sec; Liverpool Scottish Regimental Association, Colin Hughes, Hon Sec LSRA, 134 Stamford Road, Southport, Merseyside, PR8 4EX.

New Honorary Air Commodore Is Appointed To RAF Lossiemouth Auxilary Regiment Squadron
Her Majesty The Queen has been graciously pleased to approve the appointment of Major General The Honourable Seymour Monro as Honorary Air Commodore of No 2622 (Highland) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force Regiment who are based at RAF Lossiemouth. General Monro, a former Director of Infantry, enjoyed a distinguished career in the Army retiring in 2003 to take up the appointment of Executive Director of the Atlantic Salmon Trust, a UK and Ireland wide charity and the lead NGO for Atlantic salmon and sea trout conservation. He relinquished this post earlier this year. He lives in Dallas and is now involved in a number of charitable organizations.
2622 (Highland) Squadron is the most northerly Royal Auxiliary Air Force Unit in the United Kingdom and was formed in 1979 to assist with the ground defence of that airfield. Initially, personnel were recruited solely from the local area but recruiting now extends to the North, East and West Coasts of Scotland. The badge of 2622 (Highland) Squadron, approved in 1985, depicts the Burghead Bull, derived from the Pictish Fort of Burghead, seven miles west of Lossiemouth. The badge carries the Gaelic Motto “Seasaidh Sinn Ar Tir” which is translated as “We Stand Our Ground”. Auxiliary officers of the Squadron are entitled to wear the Grey Douglas tartan kilt as part of their mess uniform, a privilege granted to all Scottish Royal Auxiliary Air Force officers by King Edward VIII.
The Squadron was mobilised for the first time in its history for OP TELIC in February 2003 when personnel were used to reinforce regular RAF Regiment Squadrons and various ‘Survive to Operate’ units. 51 Squadron RAF Regiment, also based at RAF Lossiemouth, included a number of 2622 Squadron personnel when it was amongst the first units to cross the Iraqi border. Since that time personnel from 2622 (Highland) Squadron have continued to provide sustainment to the regular RAF Regiment units deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. The squadron currently has 12 of its members serving on a 6-month tour of duty with 51 Squadron in Iraq.
Today 2622 (Highland) Squadron reservists give a commitment to serve in uniform for a minimum of 27 days per year. Monthly training weekends are held at the Squadron Headquarters RAF Lossiemouth. Once a year the whole Squadron deploy either overseas or within the UK for a two-week annual camp. This year the Squadron are in Norfolk and last weekend they were visited by Major General Monro and Group Captain Al Monkman the Station Commander at RAF Lossiemouth.
Following the visit, Major General Monro, said ”I was ‘very impressed with the enthusiasm and professionalism I witnessed at Thetford on the Annual Training exercise this weekend. I am particularly honoured and delighted as a former Army Officer who commanded the Queen’s Own Highlanders in the first Gulf War and in Belfast, to have been appointed by Her Majesty as Honorary Air Commodore of 2622 (Highland) Squadron. It is a great privilege to follow in the distinguished footsteps of George Chesworth and my late Father, Hector Monro. I was most impressed to hear about the Auxiliaries and especially about their active service in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some are there now, integrated into the regular RAF Squadrons, and carrying out key operational tasks. I have great admiration for what they are doing and also for their families back here in the North. I am also grateful to their employers who have been so supportive and continue to be so. My role is to help the Squadron with advice and encouragement, to spread the word about their activities and so to improve recruitment to this valuable and valued element of our Armed Services. It’s a thoroughly active, interesting and enjoyable part time job. I look forward to visiting the Squadron regularly and to representing their interests in whatever way I can.”

Email from Joanna Lumley regarding Johnny Gurkha (after signing her petition) (UPDATE)
Thank you so much for signing the Gurkha Justice petition, and joining our campaign. Already, tens of thousands of people have signed: an extraordinary response in support of an extraordinary group of people. We've had great coverage for the campaign in the media across the world, and with excellent support from our UK papers.
We must be clear. We're not looking for a Government "review" of cases of ex-Gurkhas. We're not looking at a slight amendment in the law, a way of getting around the High Court's terrific judgement last week.
We demand the full, fundamental change in law that will allow all retired Gurkhas the right to live here.
In November, I plan to go to Downing Street and present the Gurkha Justice petition to the Government on your behalf. I want the petition to be so big, so huge, that they simply can't fail to listen.
To make the biggest possible impact, we really need more people to sign: lots more. I want this to be one of the biggest petitions ever handed to the Government, to show our support for the Gurkha cause.
Your support for the campaign is a fantastic boost: thank you so much. But, if possible, I need to ask you to help in two other ways, to encourage others to sign. Firstly, ask all of your friends and colleagues to sign up to the Gurkha Justice Campaign at www.gurkhajustice.org.uk - please do forward them this email, or email or contact them directly yourself.
And secondly, you can now download a petition form for signing from www.gurkhajustice.org.uk/gurkha_campaign_petition_form.pdf. Please download and print some copies, and ask friends and colleagues who have not signed on line to sign up. Please do pass it round (some friends of mine have run street stalls asking people for their signatures - I'm not asking you to go that far!) and return completed sheets to me at the address on the form by the end of October.
Finally - thank you again for your support. Together, we can finally right this wrong.
With warmest good wishes,
Joanna Lumley for the Gurkha Justice Campaign

Appeal from Joanna Lumley regarding Johnny Gurkha
I received an e-mail regarding the victory of the Gurkhas in the High Court last week, which indicates Joanna Lumley's web-site and her wish to continue her fight for justice for these great, loyal and courageous warriors to whom we owe so much.
Please read the following from Joanna Lumley:
"The Gurkhas have won a famous victory in their landmark case this week. However, the judge was only able to declare the current policy that excludes pre 1997 Gurkhas from the right to live in the UK as 'unlawful. Only the B ritish Government can put in place the new policy that the B ritish people want - the right of all Gurkhas to settle in the UK irrespective of the date of retirement. There is a real danger that the Government will fudge this opportunity and bring in new rules that still discriminate against pre 1997 retirees. For that reason, I am asking if you would publicise my new website www.gurkhajustice.org.uk.
I am asking the British public to sign up to it in their millions so that I might go, within days, to the Prime Minister with the largest ever petition on this issue to show him the strength of feeling from all sections of society."

MESSAGE FROM THE REGULAR BATTALION:
GENERAL Hopefully this covers everyone; with so many constituent parts it would be easy to miss someone out!!!
The
pace of life is ever frantic and there is much change afoot within
Following the Commanding Officers’ return from
Numinayah and the deployment of 53 Bde to
Living with the 50 Bde MiTT is a Battalion MiTT with Major Toby Christie and WO2 Eddie Murray at the helm, which has to ‘commute’ to work to be with its designated Battalion. Further south and some way out of the city, Major Barry McMaster and WO2 Euan Philbin cover the third and final Battalion of the 50th Iraqi Brigade.
The
first to leave the COB, however, was actually the Special Operations Company
MiTT under Major Adrian Reilly and WO2 Tony

Finally, we have a MiTT about to begin work in
arguably the poorest part of the city, the Hyaniyah.
This MiTT is headed up by Major
Jes Giles and WO2 ‘Shuggy’

Initial experiences of MiTTing have been very
satisfying. The Iraqi Army is keen to do business with us and is improving
daily. Its success on operations has given it a new-found confidence which
reflects the general optimism in
Living conditions are reasonably austere forward of the COB and deliberately so. Now is not the time to begin building large camps across the city so we operate with only the very basics forward. Solar showers, boil-in-the-bag rations and the intermittent burst of air conditioning in old warehouses are the norm. For most, that is eminently more pleasurable than being confined to the COB and it is amazing to see just how ingenuity can transform 2 square metres of concrete floor into a home from home.

The Welfare Office has been extremely busy and we all take great comfort in the knowledge that the families in Fallingbostel are making the most of our absence through an action-packed calendar of events. Friends of the Regimental Museum
A letter from Lt Col Bobby Towns is here. Please read the whole thing and action where necessary or if you can help the Museum in any way. One of the main points is:
"Regularly I read comments on the website of how rightly proud you all are to be members of the “Blue Mafia” and therefore, I was surprised to find this is not supported in the numbers that contribute to the running of this excellent facility by making a donation or subscription through the Friends of the Museum Scheme. Less than 5% of all those who served in the QO HLDRS have made or regularly make contributions. I would like to think this low percentage is because you don’t know about this appeal which has now been in place for some time and I would ask all who receive this communication, not only to consider a contribution, but in addition to play a part by passing it on to all QO HLDRS (and anyone else who you can persuade to contribute) in your address books"
[Direct Debit/donation form in pdf format is here] Please print off and return or pass a copy to anyone you know who might want one
|
The Museum also needs help in other ways
Work Party
"When required I would like to have a number of QO HLDRS available to assist with this and therefore have in mind a database called the Fort George Fifty. I calculate that, based on past experience that this will be the number required (taking into consideration “Sick Chitties etc”) to support a Fatigue Party of 10 on any particular day! To volunteer your services please email me at bob@townssb.freeserve.co.uk simply adding Fort George Fifty and please include your address, Telephone Number and where possible Mobile Number. Please note that an NCO IC is not required!

RESEARCH - SOURCES OF INFORMATION
Before you start any research on soldiers from World War One it might be worth visiting the 1914-1918 website for some useful advice from someone who has been down the research path.
Look at this website as well: National Archives (Army) as they have a guide to tracing your military ancestors. If you have a question about regimental history or are looking for photos etc - use the information request form here to contact Regimental Headquarters who will pass details to the Museum staff.
Details of most individual soldiers are not usually kept within the museum's archives. Very often, more information on individual soldiers are held at one of the following locations:
The National Archives (for Enquiries Pre-1920)
Note - during World War Two 60% of the service records from the First World War were lost or destroyed. |
World War One Soldiers' Documents
The Service Personnel & Veterans Agency (for Enquiries Post-1920)
Please try and add regimental numbers, units etc - as much detail as possible to help us help you. | |||||
