Major General Graham Lamb CMG OBEMajor General Lamb was born on 21 May 1953 and educated at Rannoch School and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where he represented the Academy at Modern Pentathlon and won his 'blue'. He was granted a Regular Commission in the Queen's Own Highlanders on 8 March 1973 and joined the 1st Battalion in Osnabruck. In 1975-77 he commanded 81 Army Youth Team at Inverness. In 1975 he won the Army Bobsleigh Championship, came 5th in the British Championships, and 31st in the Nations Cup, being awarded his Army Colours for Bobsleighing.
In 1985 he attended Staff College, Camberley. In 1988-90 he commanded B Company of the 1st Battalion in Munster, before attending the Joint Services Defence College at Greenwich in 1989-90. He commanded the 1st Battalion, Queens Own Highlanders, in Munster from September 1991 to October 1993, prior to amalgamation with The Gordon Highlanders**, and was then in the Ministry of Defence (Military Operations) being promoted to Colonel in June 1994. **NB This is wrong! Lt Col (Now Brig) HBHE Monro commanded 1 QO HLDRS Oct 93 until Sep 94 and 1 HLDRS thereafter.
He was a student on the Higher Command and Staff Course in 1996 before being promoted to Brigadier in June as Commander 5th Airborne Brigade. He was a student at the Royal College of Defence Studies in 1998 and then became Assistant Commandant (Land) at the newly configured Joint Services Command and Staff College at Shrivenham. He assumed command of the 3rd (United Kingdom) Division on promotion to Major General in June 2003.
He was Mentioned in Dispatches in 1981, awarded the MBE in 1988, made an OBE in 1991 for his services in the Gulf War and was awarded the Queens Commendation for Valuable Service in 1994. He was awarded the CMG in 2003.
