Xmas Message from Brigadier Hugh Munro CBE

“I have been asked by the noble Seoras to send in a Christmas message to all readers of Cabar Feidh and I am delighted to do so on the subject of food. I first met him (and so many of you) in Belfast Barracks, Osnabruck when I seemed to be ‘permanent’ extra orderly officer and he was in the queue for scoff in the cookhouse. Observing people being served their ‘scoff’ in prison seems to be a regular occurrence in my current job as Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons. Soup, chips and crumble and custard are regular fayre (not necessarily all on the same plate in the way that Sakai might have done!) in the BarL and elsewhere. Prison food is maybe not quite up to the standard many of you enjoyed or expected back in those heady days of our youth. Good ‘scoff’ is very much in our minds at Christmas and I wish all readers a magnificent Christmas ‘scoff’ and all the very best for 2010.

Sorry I am not a Moray Loon, but looking at the list of names on your list I do recognize a few. Due to my movements now I am sorry I cannot be there with you, but I wish you all have a terrific evening (I am sure you will).
Take care and all the best to everyone present we hope to see them at the big reunion in 2011 in Inverness if not before.
Aye yours
Stewart

Message from Murdoch MacLeod

I am running the Loch Ness Marathon, the hilliest in Britain and approximately 26.6 miles! The most important point is that I am raising money for Help for Heroes, an organisation you are well familiar with which I am proud to say has raised over £26M for helping wounded soldiers who have returned from theatres of operations such as Afghanistan and Iraq.
I launched my web page last Friday. To View click www.bmycharity.com/V2/mac

A letter sent in by Nick Ridley

At the Association AGM last month Bobby Towns read out a letter which strongly criticised the regiment for not looking after a widow, so I thought it might be of interest to put on our website a copy of the Open Letter published in the Times and written by Lt Col David Blair's daughter saying how good she thought the regiment were at looking after their families.
Clearly we try but sometimes not hard enough.

What is dedication?

He was not a Seaforth Highlander or a Cameron Highlander nor was he a Queen’s Own Highlander but I do believe this man deserves some recognition on this website for the work that he does. His name is Albert Verkover and for the last 47 Years he has been blowing his bugle along with his colleagues from the Last Post Association every night at the Menin Gate, Ypres to remember all the service men that lost their lives in the First World War. The only time he misses is when he is ill or on holiday. Now that is dedication. It was a great honour for me to meet him. If you ever go there please print off a photo and take it over to him. Dear All
I have just been made aware of a Scam being operated under the umbrella of HMRC (Her Majesties Revenue and Customs). A group of Scammers will call / e-mail you (Pretending to be HMRC) to advise you that you have been under paid Tax for last year and state that they want to credit your bank account. A senior retired police officer was phone yesterday and told he was due £300.59 and would he fill out his Bank details on the attached Form. He smelt a rat and looked at the e-mail address given which was; hmrc.co.uk The real HMRC are a government agency so their e-mail will be; hmrc.gov He called HMRC in Livingston and they confirmed this was a scam and that all such approached should be reported immediately and e-mail deleted. Please be aware of this Scam and pass it on to friends etc.

Jimmy Cumming

Jimmy Cumming has recently been diagnosed with Leukaemia and is undergoing treatment in Ward B9 of the Beatson Clinic in Glasgow. Despite the shock of the diagnosis Jimmy is looking well and is very positive about his outcome. He will be in the Beatson for about the next four months, so if anyone would like to visit him he would be more than glad to swap a few war stories, however please check with Anne-Marie first as some of his current medication makes him feel very tired directly after taking it.
Anne-Marie's telephone number is 07846758322.

4 Scots Ferry First Aid

Soldiers from The Highlanders, 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland were involved in the helicopter rescue of a man badly injured on board a P&O ferry last weekend.
Company Sergeant Major Andrew Macinnes and 8 other soldiers were returning to their base in Fallingbostel, North Germany aboard the P&O Pride of Hull from Hull to Rotterdam when the ship's captain asked them for assistance. A man had been assaulted by some other passengers and was very seriously hurt. When the ship's security staff attempted to break up the fight, the Sergeant Major and his men were asked to assist. Then the two young corporals, Brian Allen and Douglas Young, who had both served as Team Medics on operations throughout the autumn, swung into action.
CSM Macinnes, who has served in the Battalion for 22 years, became the liaison officer between the ship's staff and the soldiers while Cpls Young and Allen treated the casualty and communicated with HM Coastguard. Cpl Allen, from Fettercairn in Angus, maintains the Anti Tank Platoon's vehicles and has been in the Army for 19 years. "Cpl Young and I made an immediate assessment that the casualty needed hospital attention as he had suffered severe head injuries. I stabilised his breathing and bleeding, placed him in the recovery position and monitored his well-being as we waited for the helicopter"
Cpl Young is a Detachment Commander in the Anti Tank Platoon and has been in the Army for 13 years. He is from Forres, near Inverness and, unlike most of his Battalion, deployed to Afghanistan last year as a Section Commander with 16 Air Asslt Bde. "When I spoke to the Coastguard and a Doctor from Aberdeen on the Satellite Phone and radio I mentioned I was Army First Aid trained and briefed them on the casualty's injuries. He kept slipping in and out of consciousness and clearly needed hospital treatment quickly. We just had to use our training to keep him stable until the helicopter arrived."
The Highlanders were on their way back to their Germany base after attending the funeral of LCpl Andrew Young, a very popular member of their Battalion, who was tragically killed in a road accident at Easter near his home in Port Soy, Scotland only weeks after returning from operations. Most of 4 SCOTS were deployed on Op TELIC 12 in Iraq with 7 Armoured Brigade until last December, where they were mentoring and training the Iraqi Army. However, B Company was detached and served in Afghanistan.
P&O Ferries commended The Highlanders for volunteering to assist during a very challenging on-board medical emergency. The company said: "They didn't have to come forward but they stepped up to the mark and their calm professionalism shone through. You couldn't ask for better role models. We will be writing to them to express our appreciation and invite them to come back as our guests in the future."

Billy 'Dinger' Bell

Firstly I would like to say thanks to everyone who got in touch with me after my previous e-mail. Even if it was only to remind me what a 'crabbit sicht' I was in those days. I must admit I was a little sceptical about the power of the internet but I have been proven wrong. Now putting my new found faith to the test has anybody got any news on the whereabouts of the following guys.
Jock Barr, we served together in Osnabruck the last time I saw him was at the funeral of his brother in law, Davie Ross who was killed in NI whilst serving with the RMP although he was formerly QO. Alec Blaney, who worked in the Sergeants Mess and was married to Faye.
Best regards

Ian (Flip) Kerr - Update

Just received this update from Jim Robertson in Berlin.

Pat Gillespie.

Flip's Phone No. 0049 30 3638100 Phone you guys, support an old comrade.

Hi, Everyone,

Just thought that I would up date you on Ian (Flip). Well he has been home now for about 4 weeks and forby a few aches and pains he seems to be enjoying himself, with his own TV his own room and his magic bed (ha ha). Its a fantastic piece of machinery, he can raise it, lower it, tip it. Ian just loves it. The down side of things is that he can't eat or drink through his mouth, its all done intravenously, but he has accepted this. He cant get out of bed unless there is a physiotherapist at his side, however we are hoping they will give us authority to walk him about in the room, with our assistance. Other than that he is fine. If you want you can call him at home at anytime I am sure he would love to hear from you. Margaret is coping very well now, it was a bit of a strain to begin with. but once all the medical things were put in place and Ian's routine was all organised, she was fine. They are both very strong willed and I'm sure they will cope with the situation, at least they are happier now that Ian's Home. They both send their regards to you all, so do I.

Cheers for now. Jim.

Billy Dinger Bell

Recently he celebrated his 60th birthday. As with most of his contempories he would need a slightly bigger bush to hide behind nowadays. He is married to Christine with 2 kids and 4 grandkids and now lives in Lochgelly and works in Dunfermline. They remember fondly their stay in Osnabruck from 1972 to 1975. Billy was in the QO HLDRS from 71 to 77.

He recalls a young platoon commander called Lamb who has gone on to greater things. He would welcome contact from anybody whom he served with. Click here to send him an email.

Speech by Lt. Gen Sir Graeme Lamb

The Boss (also known as Nails) made a speech with his usual historical quotes to the troops at Colchester when they announced Op Awards List 32. There are those of us who remember his famous quote of 'Train Hard Die Hard Train Easy Die Easy' as CO 1 QO HLDRS. (I have changed this to STUDY HARD PASS EASY! for my S4 students as we near the exam period! )If only we could persuade him to wear the Blue Hackle......rather than the jam coloured beret thing he wears nowadays.

Favourite lines:

Lt. Gen Sir Graeme Lamb

"They are the British Armed Forces; they defend this realm and our way of life, they are made of sterner stuff and when asked will call out whomever, whenever onto whatever field of battle they choose and gladly. Look no further for your 21st Century role models; these are your real heroes: they live amongst you, they defend you and your right to freedom and the freedom of those less fortunate than you. There are none better and I would wish to work with none other. "

Hong Kong Today

Bobby 49 and his superior officer Mrs Margaret Munro recently passed through Hong Kong and have sent some photos. As Margaret reports:

It was fantastic to be back in Hong Kong after 28 years, but unfortunately the weather wasn't kind to us, which means some of the photos aren't good. We were up and on deck at 6.30am hoping to see Stanley Fort as we sailed past on our way to dock at Central Pier, but it wasn't to be as it was drizzling & the clouds were so low. Even when we were in Stanley Village it was barely visible through the clouds.

We made our way to the Star Ferry, crossing for free as we're seniors, then took the no6 bus to Stanley. Before hitting Stanley Market we called in at Ellis the Jewellers shop. The very w/end we're there he's opening a second shop in Wan Chai, so we paid him a visit on our way back and had a glass of champagne with him & his family. He was thrilled to see us & recognised Bobby (though not by name) the minute we walked in.

He's given us some of his business cards so if anyone would like one let us know - preferably after we get home on 1st April. Stanley Bay has been transformed. The "Shanty" homes have gone, but the Smugglers Inn still looks the same though it's now surrounded by up market Eateries & Bars & a MacDonalds! Even up Victoria Peak the views were not good. The top of the Peak has also been transformed, into a vast shopping complex etc which we thought spoilt it.

51st Highland Division - Liberation of Holland

Dear Sir

I am hoping that you might be able to help with names and addresses of ex 51st HD veterans who served during the liberation of Holland in 1944.

I have been asked to be the UK link for Vught council, Holland, for their planned 65th anniversary of liberation celebrations. They hope to write to as many veterans as possible to invite them over for 2 days of celebration October 24th & 25th (Saturday & Sunday).

It is in the early stages of planning at present, there is talk of other towns joining to make it larger celebration. The towns of Haaren, St. Michielsgestel. If this is the case the celebrations would most probably start on Friday 23rd October. Early plans are to invite the veterans and a guest, (partner, relative or carer ) to attend. I am not sure of costs yet, but I think that they will have to pay for their travel across to Holland. In the mean time I am trying to get some help from the national lottery fund to help with travel expenses. I also plan to contact various airlines to see if they can help, doubtful in the current economic climate though.

So if you could put a few feelers out for me to see if there is any interest, I would be most grateful.

many thanks, regards Richard Sands (www.keep-em-moving.com)

Anyone involved and wants to go please email Richard via his website.
