Xmas Message from Brigadier Hugh Munro CBE“I have been asked by the noble Seoras to send in a Christmas message to all readers of Cabar Feidh and I am delighted to do so on the subject of food. I first met him (and so many of you) in Belfast Barracks, Osnabruck when I seemed to be ‘permanent’ extra orderly officer and he was in the queue for scoff in the cookhouse. Observing people being served their ‘scoff’ in prison seems to be a regular occurrence in my current job as Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons. Soup, chips and crumble and custard are regular fayre (not necessarily all on the same plate in the way that Sakai might have done!) in the BarL and elsewhere. Prison food is maybe not quite up to the standard many of you enjoyed or expected back in those heady days of our youth. Good ‘scoff’ is very much in our minds at Christmas and I wish all readers a magnificent Christmas ‘scoff’ and all the very best for 2010. |

What is dedication? He was not a Seaforth Highlander or a Cameron Highlander nor was he a Queen’s Own Highlander but I do believe this man deserves some recognition on this website for the work that he does. His name is Albert Verkover and for the last 47 Years he has been blowing his bugle along with his colleagues from the Last Post Association every night at the Menin Gate, Ypres to remember all the service men that lost their lives in the First World War. The only time he misses is when he is ill or on holiday. Now that is dedication. It was a great honour for me to meet
him. If you ever go there please print off a photo and take it over to him. To view the photos of him click here. Seoras McIntosh (tosh23) |

From Maurice GibsonDear All Maurice Gibson | Jimmy CummingJimmy Cumming has recently been diagnosed with Leukaemia and is undergoing treatment in Ward B9 of the Beatson Clinic in Glasgow. Despite the shock of the diagnosis Jimmy is looking well and is very positive about his outcome. Ian (Flip) Kerr - UpdateJust received this update from Jim Robertson in Berlin. Pat Gillespie. Flip's Phone No. 0049 30 3638100 Phone you guys, support an old comrade. Hi, Everyone, Just thought that I would up date you on Ian (Flip). Well he has been home now for about 4 weeks and forby a few aches and pains he seems to be enjoying himself, with his own TV his own room and his magic bed (ha ha). Its a fantastic piece of machinery, he can raise it, lower it, tip it. Ian just loves it. The down side of things is that he can't eat or drink through his mouth, its all done intravenously, but he has accepted this. He cant get out of bed unless there is a physiotherapist at his side, however we are hoping they will give us authority to walk him about in the room, with our assistance. Other than that he is fine. If you want you can call him at home at anytime I am sure he would love to hear from you. Margaret is coping very well now, it was a bit of a strain to begin with. but once all the medical things were put in place and Ian's routine was all organised, she was fine. They are both very strong willed and I'm sure they will cope with the situation, at least they are happier now that Ian's Home. They both send their regards to you all, so do I. Cheers for now. Jim. |
Billy Dinger BellRecently he celebrated his 60th birthday. As with most of his contempories he would need a slightly bigger bush to hide behind nowadays. He is married to Christine with 2 kids and 4 grandkids and now lives in Lochgelly and works in Dunfermline. They remember fondly their stay in Osnabruck from 1972 to 1975. Billy was in the QO HLDRS from 71 to 77. He recalls a young platoon commander called Lamb who has gone on to greater things. He would welcome contact from anybody whom he served with. Click here to send him an email. ![]() |
Speech by Lt. Gen Sir Graeme LambThe Boss (also known as Nails) made a speech with his usual historical quotes to the troops at Colchester when they announced Op Awards List 32. There are those of us who remember his famous quote of 'Train Hard Die Hard Train Easy Die Easy' as CO 1 QO HLDRS. (I have changed this to STUDY HARD PASS EASY! for my S4 students as we near the exam period! )If only we could persuade him to wear the Blue Hackle......rather than the jam coloured beret thing he wears nowadays. Favourite lines: ![]() "They are the British Armed Forces; they defend this realm and our way of life, they are made of sterner stuff and when asked will call out whomever, whenever onto whatever field of battle they choose and gladly. Look no further for your 21st Century role models; these are your real heroes: they live amongst you, they defend you and your right to freedom and the freedom of those less fortunate than you. There are none better and I would wish to work with none other. " |

Hong Kong TodayBobby 49 and his superior officer Mrs Margaret Munro recently passed through Hong Kong and have sent some photos. As Margaret reports: It was fantastic to be back in Hong Kong after 28 years, but unfortunately the weather wasn't kind to us, which means some of the photos aren't good. We were up and on deck at 6.30am hoping to see Stanley Fort as we sailed past on our way to dock at Central Pier, but it wasn't to be as it was drizzling & the clouds were so low. Even when we were in Stanley Village it was barely visible through the clouds. We made our way to the Star Ferry, crossing for free as we're seniors, then took the no6 bus to Stanley. Before hitting Stanley Market we called in at Ellis the Jewellers shop. The very w/end we're there he's opening a second shop in Wan Chai, so we paid him a visit on our way back and had a glass of champagne with him & his family. He was thrilled to see us & recognised Bobby (though not by name) the minute we walked in. He's given us some of his business cards so if anyone would like one let us know - preferably after we get home on 1st April. Stanley Bay has been transformed. The "Shanty" homes have gone, but the Smugglers Inn still looks the same though it's now surrounded by up market Eateries & Bars & a MacDonalds! Even up Victoria Peak the views were not good. The top of the Peak has also been transformed, into a vast shopping complex etc which we thought spoilt it. Click on image below to view slideshow |

51st Highland Division - Liberation of HollandDear Sir I am hoping that you might be able to help with names and addresses of ex 51st HD veterans who served during the liberation of Holland in 1944. I have been asked to be the UK link for Vught council, Holland, for their planned 65th anniversary of liberation celebrations. They hope to write to as many veterans as possible to invite them over for 2 days of celebration October 24th & 25th (Saturday & Sunday). It is in the early stages of planning at present, there is talk of other towns joining to make it larger celebration. The towns of Haaren, St. Michielsgestel. If this is the case the celebrations would most probably start on Friday 23rd October. Early plans are to invite the veterans and a guest, (partner, relative or carer ) to attend. I am not sure of costs yet, but I think that they will have to pay for their travel across to Holland. In the mean time I am trying to get some help from the national lottery fund to help with travel expenses. I also plan to contact various airlines to see if they can help, doubtful in the current economic climate though. So if you could put a few feelers out for me to see if there is any interest, I would be most grateful. many thanks, regards Richard Sands (www.keep-em-moving.com) Anyone involved and wants to go please email Richard via his website. |
