BARRY MORGAN – QUEEN’S OWN HIGHLANDERS
Barry was from the Isle of Wight and passed out of the Highland Brigade Depot as a member of Clive Squad on 14 January 1967. On joining the battalion in Berlin (where his Brother-in Law was serving) he joined15 Pl D Company. In 1968 Barry was part of 15 Platoon who won the Champion Platoon. Barry was well known within the battalion for his long standing and excellence with military communications. Following the battalion’s move to Redford Barracks Barry’s long-standing relationship with the Signals Platoon began when he attended a Signals Cadre. Barry excelled on the cadre and was then immediately transferred to the Signals Platoon. Starting as a Private Soldier Signaller and progressing to the rank of Colour Sergeant, it cannot be over emphasised the importance of that role. Whether in Sharjah, Belize, Northern Ireland, Hong Kong, the Falklands, during the Firemen’s Strike, or on a hilltop on the Lairig Ghru, without Barry’s skill without signal communications the Battalion simply did not function. Barry spent the majority of his 22 years’ service, serving within the Signals world where he progressed through promotion as a Detachment Commander, with a special affiliation to Support Company, and later as a senior NCO in the platoon—and as an instructor with 2/51 Highland and 3 UDR—Barry Morgan did the Signals Platoon and the Queen’s Own Highlanders more than proud. Barry’ sporting prowess on the golf course and representing the Sergeants Mess against the GLOSTERS Sergeants Mess in the World Conker Championship in Tidworth in 1983. Barry opened for the Sergeants Mess in the first bout, all done in a boxing ring with white clad officials, he proceeded to reduce his opponent’s conker to mush with the most effective of strikes. Barry’s final position was CQMS HQ Company prior to his discharge on 10 September 1988. Barry passed away on 08 March 2026 at the age of 78, at Raigmore Hospital and was laid to rest on 25 March 2026.
